My 2019 Reading List!

Updated: Jan 22, 2019

I absolutely loved reading when I was in elementary school and junior high. I was reading at least 3 books at any given time and it drove my parents crazy! They would literally come into my room at night and have to take my books away because I couldn’t put them down to go to bed. And yes, I was that weird girl at recess hiding under the slides reading my latest novel.

Reading kind of lost its magic for me when high school hit. Required readings took over my life and I haven’t read a book for fun ever since. It makes me so sad! So this year I want to set a goal to read at least 10 books. I’ve heard incredible things about all of these books and thought I’d share them with you. If you decide to read any of them, let me know and we can discuss!

I know this book was HUGE last year and most of you have probably already read it, but I'm finally hopping on the bandwagon. Better late than never! This feel-good, honest novel is a #1 New York Times Bestseller and has nearly 10,000 positive reviews on Amazon. Rachel Hollis has built an empire, and she explains how to find joy and productivity in the journey of becoming a happy, confident person. I have high expectations for this one and I can't wait to see what all the hype is about!

This is one I started at the end of 2018 and hope to finish this year. It has different excerpts from addresses and books by President Nelson about all kinds of topics -- from the miracle of the human body to the second coming. My husband and I have made it a goal this year to read an excerpt after our nightly scripture study, and although we haven't been perfect so far, we've learned so much! I also love how the teachings are short and categorized. It makes it simple to find what you're looking for and gives a quick spiritual boost.

Born to Shine

I'm probably most excited about this book to be completely honest. I've been following Ashley Lemieux for a few years now and her story is so heartbreaking and inspiring. I'm actually trying to get tickets to her book tour (she's coming to Salt Lake!!) so I can get started reading her book ASAP. If you want to hear more about her story, her personal Instagram is @ashleyklemieux and her business page is @theshineproject.

My anxiety got really unbearable when I started college almost four years ago. I've learned how to manage it for the most part over the years, but I'm always looking for good resources to clear my mind and improve my mental health. This book has tons of positive reviews on Amazon and teaches what causes mental clutter, how to reframe negative thoughts, how to eliminate or improve bad relationships, and provides other useful resources to manage anxiety.

Up until about a month ago I LOATHED working out and all I wanted was to eat chicken nuggets every day. There were times when I would go to the gym and literally sit in my car in the parking lot and cry because I didn't want to go inside (ridiculous, I know). I don't know if it was switching gyms or the excitement of the new year, but something changed and now I find joy in eating healthy and working out. I was researching some of the best overall health books and this one came up at least 20 times. I'm super excited to read it and learn more about my body!

I took a conflict resolution and management class last summer and we were each assigned different books to help what we were working on in our personal lives. I was given a book on forgiveness, but a lot of my classmates wanted to work on their perfectionism. This book was brought up multiple times and was really beneficial to everyone who read it. I'm not a total perfectionist, but I hold a lot of guilt when I don't things right or let go of certain responsibilities. I think this book will really help me overcome some of those negative traits and make me a better person.

When I wrote for LDS Living I read different parts of this book to get inspiration for articles, and everything I read was absolutely incredible. The stories shared and the insights in this book are truly inspired and I think anyone can benefit from its teachings, even if you're not a member of the Church. Plus, I think everyone could use a little guidance on how to be truly happy.

Purpose

This is another book written by one of my favorite influencers. Jordan Lee Dooley teaches women and young girls around the world how to have a relationship with God and how to navigate life as a 20-something-year-old in such a crazy world. Everything she posts is so inspiring and I can't wait to read this book she's been working on for so long. The title itself makes me excited, and I have a feeling Purpose will be one of my favorites on this list. Find her on Instagram @jordanleedooley.

Just a heads up -- this post contains affiliate links. There won't be any extra cost to you, but if you choose to buy one of these books, I might get a small portion of the revenue. And as always, I would never recommend anything I don't believe in or wouldn't use!
